The heavenly island of Cozumel Mexico is a fantastic destination with friends or family. A popular cruise ship port of call and known for amazing scuba diving, sadly most people only visit Cozumel off the boat or as a day trip from Cancun.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable vacay with older kids and teens or a couples getaway that includes snorkeling and exploring gorgeous raw beaches, then you will love learning how to spend a week in Cozumel.

Snorkeling in Cozumel is the Best in the Caribbean

This snazzy resort happens to be a few steps from one of the best snorkeling sites in Cozumel and one of the best restaurants too: The Money Bar Beach Club.

Note: We felt VERY safe in Cozumel on all fronts, pandemic and all. More on that later.

Things to do in Cozumel

If you’re planning a trip to Cozumel during spring break, you’ll find plenty of activities to keep you busy. You can go diving with whale sharks, swim with dolphins, and even take a boat tour through the mangroves.

Here’s the scoop and our unabashed opinion about the best excursions for Cozumel Mexico, from snorkeling or diving to beach club hopping, from renting scooters to eating and shopping.

We visited Cozumel in December.

We say spend a week on the gorgeous, undeveloped island of Cozumel Mexico and you won’t regret it. Most people only visit for a day— that’s a mistake!

Best Snorkel Spots in Cozumel

The Caribbean island of Cozumel offers some of the most beautiful snorkeling sites in the world. Here are some of our favorite places to visit.

PRO TIP: Snorkeling from the shore is usually free at public beaches, but Cozumel Mexico beaches maintained by a beach club or restaurant might ask you to purchase snacks or drinks. At hotel owned private beaches, you will pay an entrance fee so you can use their facilities too.

While snorkeling in Cozumel, you will see beautiful coral, sponges, sea fans, sea anemones as well as various types of colorful fishes like the Parrot Fish, Yellowfin Tuna, Royal Blue Tang (Dory!), and more.

You are also likely to swim with a sea turtle and see a moray eel, nurse shark (harmless!), eagle ray, or other stingrays if you go out to one of the reefs like Palancar or Columbia Reefs.

If you are in Cozumel at the end of May through September, there’s a good chance you can swim and snorkel with whale sharks! You can also swim with them in Holbox, another family friendly island in Mexico.

The Money Bar Beach Club

Located south of town, this highly rated Cozumel Mexico restaurant and small beach is also one of the best snorkeling spots from the shore.

Step right into the water for some of the best snorkeling in Cozumel. Swim and float in a counter clockwise direction around the Dzul Ha Reef. Enjoy their small beach, beach chairs, and umbrellas.

Money Bar’s food and drinks are top notch. If you came to snorkel here, it’s kind to order drinks and food in exchange for using their beach. The Money Bar is right across the street from The Landmark Resort.

Columbia Reef

If you plan to go snorkeling in Cozumel, learn about the reef before you go. It will help you decide where to swim. Also, bring your own mask and fins so you can enjoy the underwater world on your time.

One of the most famous reefs and best spots for snorkeling and scuba diving in Cozumel, you hardly have to swim since you drift easily with the current, watching the marine world below. We saw a Sea Turtle the second we put our faces in the water, as well as many other fish.

You will need to hire a boat to take you here.

El Cielo

Known as “Heaven”, this is the perfect crystal clear swimming spot known for starfish and gliding Stingrays. You can only access this spot by boat. Great with small children. You will need to hire a boat to take you here.

Palancar Reef

Another famous reef for diving and snorkeling in Cozumel, here is where we saw a school of Yellowfin Tuna and an Eel. Eagle Rays are often seen here, as well as lots of beautiful tropical fish.

The reef walls are long and deep here, as well as at Columbia Reef. You will need to hire a boat to take you to this snorkeling site.

PRO TIP: Hire a Boat with a Snorkeling Guide

We highly recommend you rent a boat driver and a snorkeling guide to take you out for the above three spots for snorkeling in Cozumel.

They will take you to Columbia Reef, the heavenly, warm shallow waters of El Cielo, and Palancar Reef. We reserved a boat ride with CozuDive and they were great. We felt very safe and well taken care of out on the Caribbean Sea.

After snorkeling with our guide along the Columbia wall, we visited El Cielo next. There they served up a freshly made pico de gallo, guacamole, and chips, plus sandwiches, cookies and Cokes. Then we wrapped up our snorkeling at Palancar Reef. CozuDive picked us up from the Money Bar pier and took us out for five hours total.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

Punta Sur is a great place to snorkel from shore. Punta Sur is found at the southern point of Cozumel and is part of a large ecological park including reefs, beaches, lagoons, and more. You will pay a small entrance fee here.

Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park

Visiting here for the day would have cost our family of six nearly $100 in entrance fees, so we chose to go elsewhere as we are not into amusement park type places. Chankanaab is super ideal if your family or group includes small, young children or on a day trip from Playa del Carmen.

How do I go scuba diving in Cozumel?

Did you know that Cozumel Mexico is the number two snorkel and dive location in the world, with Australia's Great Barrier Reef being number one.

If you want to scuba dive while in Cozumel, book a dive trip with a reputable dive company like CozuDive. They know all the secret spots to see marine life like sea turtles, eagle rays, eels, nurse sharks, lobster and more. Your scuba guide will be very knowledgeable and personable and he an the boat driver will serve up a delicious Mexican lunch between dives.

Hera are also a few more beach clubs that are great places to snorkel and swim in the crystal blue waters. If the sea is rough on the west side of the island, head around the southern tip of Cozumel to the east side for calmer waters and swimming there.

Cozumel Beach Clubs

If you’ve ever been to Cozumel, you know how beautiful it is. It’s an island paradise with white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and lots of wildlife.

When you need a break from snorkeling in Cozumel, head to a beach club.

While there are public beaches, many of the best beaches in Cozumel Mexico are maintained by a beach club or a restaurant. A beach club or restaurant will either charge a small entrance fee or require that you spend a minimum amount per person on snacks and drinks in exchange for being on the beach using their beach loungers, umbrellas, and facilities.

Any hotels owning a private beach will require you to a pay an entrance fee so you can also use their facilities. Visiting a Cozumel beach club for the day is usually money well spent.

Besides visiting the Money Bar Beach Club every day since it was right by the Landmark Resort, we visited a beach club on the west side one day, and one on the east side another day:

Palancar Beach Club

You can snorkel, rent waver runners for 30 minute increments, or just relax on this beach located on the southwest side of Cozumel. Upon entry, you will be required to have a quick health screening and temperature check.

Palancar Beach is a no-entry-fee sand beach offering a bar and restaurant; they ask that you spend a minimum of $10 per person. We rented two sets of umbrellas with comfy beach beds, drinks, french fries and chips with guacamole. Chen Rio Beach Club

This popular beach club on the southeastern shore of Cozumel is a wonderful way to enjoy soft white sand, shallow snorkeling, and swimming in a cove protected by a rock barrier. This laid-back club serves excellent food and drink. Try the shrimp. If you order a meal, you can enjoy the shade at the table for as long as you like.

Right next door is El Pescador Marisqueria & Bar and plenty of more beach to stroll and swim along. Keep following Quintana Roo C-1 along the southern tip of Cozumel until it reaches the east side. About 9.7 miles after El Mirador, you will find Chen Rio Beach Club.

Ride Scooters Around Cozumel

On a day when the Caribbean Sea is choppy and the red flag is flying (no swimming!) on the west side, then it’s likely the perfect day to head to the east side of the island, where the waters will be calmer. Likewise, when the sea is calm on the west side, it is likely rough on the east side.

The day we woke up to a red flag on the west side, my husband and I took a little walk and discovered we could easily rent three mopeds for the day and head out to explore the sights and beaches around the southern tip to the east side.

From the Landmark Resort, .3 miles south (500 meters) sits a little outdoor kiosk with several mopeds waiting to be rented, just in front of the Fiesta Americana. Barter over the price if you feel it is high. We paid $35 to rent each moped, and opted to pay $15 insurance on each since we had a teenager driving one of them.

You must visit El Mirador on Cozumel

Exploring Cozumel’s East Side

Raw and largely undeveloped, the east side is the wild side of Cozumel. You’ll see many locals headed out here too.

El Mirador

The sunny, care-free ride south along the coastal highway (Quintana Roo C-1) will take you about 30 minutes around the southern tip before heading north on the east side to stop at El Mirador.

Park and lock up your scooters, then give yourself 30 minutes or more to explore the sandy beach. This is a great spot for family photos. Watch the surf hit the rock formations and blow through the keyhole. Down the road are several blow holes, where the sea forces water through small channels and ushers out through the ground like small geysers.

Get back on your scooters and head north towards Playa Chen Rio.

Playa Chen Rio

This is fabulous beach for swimming in shallow waters along the rocks, searching for tide pools, or just napping on the beach. Remember, this is still the open sea, so keep close tabs on your kids.

Savor a lunch of grilled shrimp or lobster under a palapa at Restaurante Chen Rio, then we hit the water for some snorkeling and swimming before snoozing on the beach. Right next door is El Pescador Marisqueria & Bar.

After a few hours on the beach at Playa Chen Rio, we rode our mopeds north and hooked a left on the Carretera (Ctra.) Transversal de Cozumel to cut back west across Cozumel and straight into town. Go for some refreshing, flavorful ice cream at a La Flor de Michoacan.

Shopping

Popular things to shop for in Mexico are vanilla, chocolate, coral, leather, silver, jewelry, hammocks, liquor, and obviously souvenir trinkets.

If shopping is what you like to do on vacation, then head towards the area directly across from the ferry pier and don’t miss downtown Cozumel's central plaza: Plaza Cozumel. Another popular shopping area is the Royal Village Shopping Center (Av. Rafael E. Melgar 1).

Need groceries, toiletries, or last minute items? Shop at the Chedraui Cozumel or MEGA grocery stores for cash or needed items before you return the scooters back. Better yet, ask your concierge if they offer a grocery shopping or cooking service. Expect a service charge of 25% or similar for a grocery pick up service.

With so many things to do in Cozumel Mexico, there’s no way to do it all. But these are worth a mention.

Pretty much everyone stays on the west side of Cozumel facing Cancun.

Look for vacation rentals and resorts in Cozumel Mexico that are a south of the busy port and downtown if you like more space and a quieter vacation time.

The luxurious, sprawling condos at The Landmark Resort will have you feeling like kings and queens. When you need a break from the beach, the huge sparkling pool awaits with shaded beach beds and loungers.

Bonus: the Landmark is right across the street from the Money Bar and top-notch snorkeling. We had groceries ordered and waiting for us upon arrival — a total win-win.

Head to Money Bar Beach Club in Cozumel for best snorkeling and food

Money Bar Serving breakfast, appetizers, drinks, and dinner. You could hang out here on the beach and snorkel the reef all day. Because we were staying across the street, we ate dinner here three times. We loved the beef tacos, chicken tacos, shrimp ceviche, grilled shrimp, beef nachos, and more. (Carretera Costera Sur Km 6.5, Zona Hotelera Nte.)

Taqueria El Pique Here’s where the locals eat tacos. El Pique is found in the heart of downtown Cozumel. Try the al pastor tacos with a Coke. Don’t forget to order guacamole everywhere you go. (Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, 10 de Abril)

La Conchita del Caribe Another recommendation by a local. We dined on sensational fresh grilled lobster, mahi mahi, and shrimp. Wash it down with mexican beers or Coca Cola. (65 Avenida Sur Bis 960, Independencia)

How to get to Cozumel

Where is Cozumel? The island of Cozumel is in the Caribbean Sea, about 10 miles (16 km) off the eastern shore of the Yucatán Peninsula, in the state of Quintana Roo in southeastern Mexico.

Using United MileagePlus rewards we had racked up for over a year, we only paid for one ticket to fly our family of six to Cancun. And yes, we felt extremely safe traveling to Cozumel during the Covid pandemic - read why further down in the FAQ section.

How to get to your place in Cozumel:

1. Fly into Cancun or Cozumel We flew direct into Cancun for the best deal using United MileagePlus rewards we had racked up. For Cozumel Mexico flights directly to the island’s small airport, your best bet is booking with American, Delta, or United Airlines.

2. From Cancun, reserve a private shuttle ahead of time to transfer you from the airport to Playa del Carmen. Cancun Airport Transportations offers fantastic private shuttles. You can also take the ADO bus to Playa del Carmen. (For our family of six, the cost of the private van shuttle equaled the cost of the public bus.)

3. Once in Playa del Carmen, walk to the ferry dock and follow signs down through the shopping center to buy your tickets for the next Winjet (orange) or Ultramar (yellow and blue) ferry to Cozumel. Often there are guys offering to help take all your luggage to and from the pier via a modified bicycle for only $5 cash. You can use a credit card to buy your ferry tickets.

4. From the Cozumel ferry pier, grab a taxi to your vacation condo, hotel, or resort. They are lined up waiting to take people where they need to go. Have pesos to pay, otherwise they may say they can’t make change for your larger dollar bills.

What are the best ways to get around Cozumel?

• Taxi We used taxis a lot. If you like your taxi driver and the island is not busy, ask for their number so you can hire them again.

• Scooters Rent scooters (mopeds) for at least one day as a way to get around the island. Scooters seat up to two people, and your older teenagers may be allowed to drive one too! Scooters are a fun way to go out to the beaches on Cozumel’s east side.

• Rent a car, Jeep, or even a VW bug. You don’t really need a car rental for an entire week on Cozumel. You may just need a rental for a day. Ask your hotel concierge or vacation rental owner for good suggestions. The Landmark Resort offered them on the spot.

Cozumel Mexico Weather

What is Cozumel Mexico weather like?

We visited in late December when the temperatures were in the high 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit during the day and in the high 60s overnight. We had sunshine every day and woke up to rain on our last morning. February and March are the driest months.

From March to June are the warmest months, when Cozumel sees daytime highs around 90 degrees nighttime temps in the mid-70s. Cozumel’s rainy season begins in late summer or early fall. Mid-fall is the time that hurricanes are likely to occur.

If you prefer the cooler or less hot season, the best time to head to Cancun or Cozumel is between December and April.

The weather in Cozumel is something to consider when you begin to pack for your trip.

Using Money in Cozumel

Should I bring cash or debit and credit cards to Mexico? The answer is all the above, but read all the below to wrap your head around how best to spend money in Cozumel.

Before you leave for Mexico, call your bank and your credit card companies to let them know you are traveling to Mexico so your card does not get blocked from being used on foreign soil. Bring along several $1 (USD) bills for tipping.

Finding an ATM There are ATMS at the airport dispensing Mexican Pesos. Get some pesos here so you have money to tip your shuttle or taxi driver. Everyone happily accepts US dollars in Cancun and Cozumel, but do the math.

There is a BBVA bank housing several ATMs on the backside of the Plaza Central square in Cozumel. Look for Bancomer or Banconorte logos as they supposedly have the best rates.

MEGA and Chedraui grocery stores each host several ATM machines. Most of them dispense pesos, and some give out US dollars. Pay attention to what you are doing. When asked if you want the transaction run in Pesos or US dollars, always answer with Pesos in order to get the best exchange rate.

PRO TIP: Check to see if your cell phone provider works in Mexico, or if you need to add a temporary international plan while traveling. Our cell phone plan is Verizon stateside, and our iPhones all worked in Mexico just fine on our current plan - no add on was needed.

CASH IS KING in Cozumel Many places, like beach clubs and the scooter rental company, took cash only. Use pesos as much as possible for the best exchange rate. We really only used our credit card for ferry tickets, at The Money Bar, and at the grocery stores. We averaged spending $200 USD /day in cash.

There were no ATMs at our resort or at the beach clubs we visited. You may have to go into town to get cash. Make sure you have adequate cash each day before you head out on your adventure.

Typical Exchange Rate $1 USD = 19-20 Mexican Pesos as of this writing.

Should I use Pesos or Dollars? Most places in Cozumel will take US dollars or Pesos. Many places in Cozumel will post what their exchange rate is. Sometimes it may benefit you to pay in Pesos. We paid in pesos all the time. Do the math.

Cash or Credit Card? If you are ever asked if you want a credit card transaction run in Pesos or US dollars, always say Pesos in order to get the best exchange rate.

Tipping. Tip 10-20% at restaurants. Many of these folks went without work for several months during Mexico’s shutdown over the pandemic. Be good to them.

We felt very safe in Cozumel

How safe is Cozumel?

We felt very safe to travel to Cozumel during the Covid pandemic. Mexico had fantastic protocol in place to make you feel safe and welcome. Plus, no cruise ships were coming to the port, so it felt like we had much of the island to ourselves and plenty of space to socially distance most everywhere.

Stay up to date with travel requirements. As of January 26, 2021 the USA is requiring all international travelers—including returning U.S. citizens—to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test in order to board their flight back to the U.S.

Most business places in Cozumel adhere to the following health & safety: mask required, temperature check required, staff wear masks and get temperature checks, and staff are required to disinfect surfaces between visits.

Always drink bottled or purified water while in Mexico if you are coming from the USA or elsewhere. It’s just not a good idea to drink tap water during your visit because sanitization standards in Mexico are still different from what your body is used to, therefore you run the risk of a ruined vacation when nausea or diarrhea set in.

Use your parental common sense and keep your kids close. Especially in downtown Cozumel walking in the crowds, while swimming in the ocean, and when walking through the busy Playa del Carmen shopping area to the ferry dock. As a fam of six, we use the buddy system.

We kept our passports, laptop, extra cash, etc. in our condo in a safe. We felt very safe walking around and exploring the island of Cozumel. It reminded us of how safe we also felt discovering the island of Holbox Mexico.

Final Thoughts

Spontaneously booking a last minute snorkeling and beach vacation to Cozumel Mexico with our four kids (ages 12-18 at the time) for a week over the Christmas holiday was a HUGE HIT. We are already dreaming of returning.

It goes without saying our family loved snorkeling Cozumel Mexico reefs and shores. This is one of the best vacations to take with older kids and teens, especially if you all love water and outdoor adventure travel.
